Discover Our Cultural Heritage
Slovenski Dom, established in 1913, is Wyoming's vibrant hub for Slovenian-American culture, uniting our community through celebrations of heritage, music, and traditional cuisine in the heart of Rock Springs.
The Slovenian immigrant experience in Wyoming and Colorado during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was marked by intense struggles for survival and dignity. Many Slovenians arrived seeking opportunities in mining, only to face brutal working conditions, low wages, and discrimination. In Colorado, Slovenians played a pivotal role in the labor struggles of the Colorado Coalfield Wars, including the Ludlow Massacre of 1914, where striking miners and their families were attacked by company-backed militia. This violence underscored the need for solidarity and collective action among immigrant workers.
In Wyoming, the challenges were similar, with Slovenians enduring dangerous jobs and cultural isolation. The establishment of the Slovenski Dom in Rock Springs was not just a cultural necessity but a political act. It provided a safe space for organizing labor rights, preserving Slovenian identity, and fostering mutual aid. In a hostile environment, Slovenski Dom became a beacon of unity, enabling Slovenians to resist exploitation and advocate for fair treatment while ensuring their heritage thrived in a new land.

Cultural Heritage
The Dom immediately became a center of community activity and helped preserve the ethnic identities of those who practiced their religion, music, language, and other customs there. It was the site of ethnic large meetings including Slovenian, Croatian, and Italian lodges as well as the local chapters of the United Mine Workers. Also, it was used for dances, humorous skits in Slovenian, and raffles. Other events at the Dom included fundraisers and benefits for various causes. The Dom was the original location of the Grape Festival or Wine Arbor Festival, a celebration of the harvest. The hall would be decorated with fruit and leaves; there was ethnic dancing and skits. The first Grape Festival was held in 1922 and the last in 1988.
